My IE!

This term for my IE I am learning about the effects of sugar on our bodies. I am super excited to learn about this. So far I have learnt about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and what sugar is made of. Also what types of sugar there are. I am really looking forward to being able to share my learning with others!

Reading For Understanding Questions!

What type of dog is Maggie?
A hunt-away cross.

Who does Steve work for?
The Department Of Conservation

Why did they fit the kiwis with transmitters?
So they would be able to know if the kiwis were coping with the disruption of the logging.

What do you think ‘strong-eyed’ dog means?
I think it means the dog is intelligent and has great eyesight.

What is Steve and Maggie’s job?
It is Maggie’s job to find the kiwis and Steve’s job to tag/check on them.

What could happen if a kiwi is disturbed when sitting on an egg?
The kiwi could leave the nest with the egg still there. So the egg will die.

What is a transponder?
It’s a device for receiving radio signals.

There's a chance he will abandon the nest..what does the word abandon mean?
Leave the nest - ditch it.

What is something you have learnt after reading this?
That dogs are very important for keeping our kiwis safe.

Choose one word from the text and translate it into maori.

Current Events!

Meet The Worlds Fastest Chicken!

Did you think there was a worlds fastest chicken? Well I certainly didn't!  The worlds fastest chicken had been found in the United Kingdom. The world hen racing championships were held at the Barley Mow Public house in Derbyshire Peak District village of Bonsall. The championship has been going on for around one hundred years! And it is held annually. The winner of the race was a chicken named "Cooked it" and was trained by a nine year old school boy.

IE Seek Approval!

What is it I hope I will come to understand more deeply through this inquiry? I hope to understand the effects that sugar has on the body and learn the alternatives we can have instead of sugar. I would also like to learn how people with diabetes live their daily lives and how they treat it. What knowledge might I need to help move towards this understanding? I will need to do lots of reading and research and find out what sugar does to our bodies. What is it I hope to be able to do more competently?   What skills will I need to learn (skills) I hope to be able to share my learning with lots of people and share the effects of sugar on our bodies. What learning powers will this inquiry help me practice and develop further?  (Explain this) Being Me - sticking to my own ideas and being original.  Creativity - Find unique ways to make my creation. Connecting - Find an expert to contact to learn about someone else’s opinions/views on the effects of sugar. Resilience - Keep going when it is tough and never give up.

My Persuasive Writing!

Do you think that pit bulls are the most dangerous breed of dogs?  If you answered yes, they actually aren’t. Pit bulls are blamed for majority of dog attacks when actually they aren’t responsible.

You may be wondering why I think they aren’t. Most of the time we class pit bulls as “dangerous dogs” when people say this I wonder why they think this. Pit bulls are blamed for many vicious attacks in the case where the publisher blatantly assumes the dog’s breed is a pit bull, because pit bulls are widely known and blamed for majority of attacks.

Yes, I do admit that pit bulls attack people, but all dogs can. Any dog breed can be aggressive, it’s is all based on how the dog is treated. If the dog finds itself in a stressful situation the dog may bite to defend its territory and or owners. Most of the time they bite because they have been scared or startled. This is usually either because of the dogs upbringing - how it was raised. Abuse, neglect. Or owners have been training the dog to be vicious and harmful; is what the cause is to why dogs attack people.  Pit bulls are not to blame for these incidents; the owners or people who provoke the dog and make it upset are.

Pit bulls are not the greatest guard dogs because they love people so much! They might intervene if someone is threatening the owner but Pit bulls are great with children. They are very loving dogs, loyal and affectionate. Pit bulls are like another child for some families, just the same as you think your dog is.

Highwayman Hijinks - Have Your Say

  1. Do you think the choice Bess makes (to warn the Highwayman by taking her own life) is stupid or inspiring?
I think it is stupid because Bess wasn’t necessarily going to die. Instead of shooting herself she could have shot out the window or at the roof - which would still be a warning for the highwayman so she would still be alive and so would the highwayman.
  1. If you made a movie of this, who would you cast as the highwayman? How about Bess?
Brad Pitt because he fell madly in love with Angelina Jolie so he would be able to portray the Highwayman very well. He can also be dark and mysterious. For Bess I would cast Angelina Jolie because she was in love with Brad Pitt so she could easily be Bess (with a black wig on) and she is an amazing actress. She is really good at portraying different characters.
  1. Have you ever admired a criminal? Do you think it's OK to make robbers into heroes?
No, I don’t think that criminals should be made into heroes because they are usually a threat to the society. I have never admired a criminal.
  1. Why do you think people tell ghost stories? Is the ghost story in this poem meant to make us scared? Happy? Sad?
I think people tell ghost stories because they are entertaining. I think this story was meant to scare you.
  1. How do you feel about tragic stories? Would you switch this ending for a happy one if you could?

No
