My War Story Taster

I am writing a story about two boys that live in Hawkshead, England. War comes to their town and one of the boys, Lewis is told it is compulsory for him to go, because he is 17. His younger brother, William (The person who's perspective I am writing the story from) volunteers to go. Here is a taster of my story!

I wake up to a beautiful, crisp, sunny Saturday morning, with Lewis laying by my side. I can hear the faint crackle of bacon sizzling on the stove and the sweet smell of freshly squeezed orange juice. Mother must be cooking Lewis a birthday breakfast. He’s turning seventeen today. He can finally get a job and stop bugging me to go poaching up at Mayor Albert’s private property. We usually catch eels, wild bunnies and ducks. But I have to admit, I do love the dangerousness of trying not to get caught. We never have, but I am scared to see the wrath of Mayor Albert.

Lewis and I rock up to the dining room table to see a humongous spread of eggs, bacon, pancakes, toast, jam and freshly squeezed orange juice. Right there in front of our now, bulging eyes. We dig right into this wonderful spread. I can’t remember the last time I had raspberry jam. Mother only gets it for very special occasions. I have to admit, it is sad to see my big brother growing up. I never thought the day would come where he would find a job, get a girlfriend, find happiness. I’ve always dreamed of the day when I get to do those things.

Later that afternoon, when the sun is shining bright at the top of the sky, Mother turns on the radio as she always does at this time. “Crackle, click, crackle” “This morning the British Ambassador produced a final letter to the German Government stating that unless they were heard from by 11 o'clock this evening, a state of war will have been officially been declared.” Lewis and I stare at each other with a with a look of sorrow and despair. We knew this day would come, but we didn’t know it was this close.

End Of Term Reflection!

  • Three favourite experiences from this term and why:
  1.  Volleyball - I really enjoyed volleyball because it was great to learn the skills of a new sport and have mini games against other teams.
  2.  Litmc - I really enjoyed the Learning In The Making Conference because it was really  fun to present workshops to younger kids in the school and attend them too!
  3.  Cross country - I really enjoyed cross country because it was a sunny warm day and I got completely covered in mud!
  • Something I have learnt:
I have learnt lots of volleyball skills e.g. dig, serve and set. I also learnt the rules of the game!
  • Something I would change from this term:
I wouldn't change anything I really enjoyed this term.
  • A goal for next term:
To strive high in all areas of my learning and finish the year with a bang!

Volleyball Reflection!

HPC Volleyball!

For the past two weeks, Marama have been attending volleyball sessions held by year 12's at the college. During these sessions we learnt how to dig, set and serve. Marama was split into 8 different teams. I was in team 1, which was mostly made up of my learning team. Our coaches were Lewis, Gracie and Sophie.

At first I really struggled to serve, I would hit it on an angle so it would flip off to the side. But during the session today I did really well! I manged to score lots of points for my team, by serving! I was also quite good at setting (which is when you use your fingertips to set the ball over the net.) Overall I learnt lots of moves for volleyball!

Today was our last session :( I really enjoyed learning a new sport and playing it against other teams, it was a lot of fun!

Write Bingo: Article For The Plains Profile

Thames Gymsports Festival
On Thursday the 29th of June, a group of students years 4-8 from Ngatea Primary School attended the Thames Gym-sport festival. There were three levels of difficulty for the Gymnastics Competition: Twisters (Hard), Flyers (Medium) and Springers (Beginners). Our school did very well in the gymnastics area of the competition with some students placing in the top six for their age and level of difficulty. Two groups of year 7&8 students entered into the cheer-leading category. The two groups were called the NPS Minnie's and the NPS All Stars. Both of the groups placed in the top two. The NPS Minnie's came first and the NPS All Stars came second. Both groups have qualified to go to the Gym Sport Regionals held in Hamilton in August. Throughout the the day many of the NPS students were spotted showing a great attitude and sportsmanship and received a spot prize for this. We all thought it was an amazing experience and was a great opportunity to try something new and exciting!

Reading For Understanding Questions!

What type of dog is Maggie?
A hunt-away cross.

Who does Steve work for?
The Department Of Conservation

Why did they fit the kiwis with transmitters?
So they would be able to know if the kiwis were coping with the disruption of the logging.

What do you think ‘strong-eyed’ dog means?
I think it means the dog is intelligent and has great eyesight.

What is Steve and Maggie’s job?
It is Maggie’s job to find the kiwis and Steve’s job to tag/check on them.

What could happen if a kiwi is disturbed when sitting on an egg?
The kiwi could leave the nest with the egg still there. So the egg will die.

What is a transponder?
It’s a device for receiving radio signals.

There's a chance he will abandon the nest..what does the word abandon mean?
Leave the nest - ditch it.

What is something you have learnt after reading this?
That dogs are very important for keeping our kiwis safe.

Choose one word from the text and translate it into maori.

Meet The Worlds Fastest Chicken!

Did you think there was a worlds fastest chicken? Well I certainly didn't!  The worlds fastest chicken had been found in the United Kingdom. The world hen racing championships were held at the Barley Mow Public house in Derbyshire Peak District village of Bonsall. The championship has been going on for around one hundred years! And it is held annually. The winner of the race was a chicken named "Cooked it" and was trained by a nine year old school boy.

IE Seek Approval!

What is it I hope I will come to understand more deeply through this inquiry? I hope to understand the effects that sugar has on the body and learn the alternatives we can have instead of sugar. I would also like to learn how people with diabetes live their daily lives and how they treat it. What knowledge might I need to help move towards this understanding? I will need to do lots of reading and research and find out what sugar does to our bodies. What is it I hope to be able to do more competently?   What skills will I need to learn (skills) I hope to be able to share my learning with lots of people and share the effects of sugar on our bodies. What learning powers will this inquiry help me practice and develop further?  (Explain this) Being Me - sticking to my own ideas and being original.  Creativity - Find unique ways to make my creation. Connecting - Find an expert to contact to learn about someone else’s opinions/views on the effects of sugar. Resilience - Keep going when it is tough and never give up.

My Persuasive Writing!

Do you think that pit bulls are the most dangerous breed of dogs?  If you answered yes, they actually aren’t. Pit bulls are blamed for majority of dog attacks when actually they aren’t responsible.

You may be wondering why I think they aren’t. Most of the time we class pit bulls as “dangerous dogs” when people say this I wonder why they think this. Pit bulls are blamed for many vicious attacks in the case where the publisher blatantly assumes the dog’s breed is a pit bull, because pit bulls are widely known and blamed for majority of attacks.

Yes, I do admit that pit bulls attack people, but all dogs can. Any dog breed can be aggressive, it’s is all based on how the dog is treated. If the dog finds itself in a stressful situation the dog may bite to defend its territory and or owners. Most of the time they bite because they have been scared or startled. This is usually either because of the dogs upbringing - how it was raised. Abuse, neglect. Or owners have been training the dog to be vicious and harmful; is what the cause is to why dogs attack people.  Pit bulls are not to blame for these incidents; the owners or people who provoke the dog and make it upset are.

Pit bulls are not the greatest guard dogs because they love people so much! They might intervene if someone is threatening the owner but Pit bulls are great with children. They are very loving dogs, loyal and affectionate. Pit bulls are like another child for some families, just the same as you think your dog is.
